Pennsylvania State Vehicle Inspection & Emissions Test

Lancaster County's Auto Station for PA State Vehicle Inspections

AAMCO Transmissions and Total Car Care of Lancaster is proud to offer Pennsylvania State Vehicle Inspections and Emissions Tests. All car and truck owners in Pennsylvania are required get a State Vehicle Inspection and Emission Test every year. While the State Inspection and the Emissions Test are actually two different evaluations, most state car inspection stations, including AAMCO in Lancaster, perform them together. To complete your inspection at AAMCO, bring your car, truck, SUV, or fleet vehicle, your proof of insurance, and your vehicle registration.

What Does a Car Inspection Involve?

All vehicles built 1996 and later have an onboard computer that regulates emissions. The Pennsylvania Emissions Test requires that the state inspector runs a full set of On-Board Diagnostics (OBD.) If your vehicle’s computer is functioning properly, your vehicle’s emissions will fall within federal standards. Any computer malfunctions found in this test must be addressed and repaired.

During a car inspection, our Lancaster inspector completes a comprehensive safety evaluation which ranks the acceptability of a variety functions and systems within your car, truck, SUV, or fleet vehicle. The inspection was designed to identify anything that may put the vehicle and driver at risk, or that may present a risk for other drivers.

As part of the Pennsylvania State Vehicle Inspection, our Central PA staff will evaluate the windshield washer and wipers, lighting and electrical systems, the horn, your warning and hazard lights, brake and fuel systems, tires pressure and integrity, suspension components, and steering systems. The car inspection also includes heating and cooling systems including defrosters, safety equipment including seatbelts, side and rear mirrors, windows, the speedometer, and the odometer.

Additionally, the chassis will be inspected for structural damage, including rust and leaks that might allow toxic fumes to enter the vehicle’s interior. Your AAMCO Lancaster inspector will also compare your vehicle registrations against the VIN and check to see any emissions parts have been tampered with or removed.

If any feature or function of your vehicle ranks within the lower range of acceptability, your AAMCO state vehicle inspector may still approve the vehicle during the car inspection, with a suggestion to fix or repair items or features which are underperforming. If any feature or system does not rank within the acceptability range, the Lancaster County inspector is required to withhold approval until you repair the vehicle. We encourage you to make repairs at AAMCO Lancaster, but you are not required to do so in order to pass the car inspection. You are also eligible for a free re-test within 30 days of the original inspection.
